As i see the continued distress in my community generated by  violent crime,
it occurs to me there is more we could do to dissuade it.In particular, some
basic property maintenance. I'm not saying bring it to pristine condition,
but no broken windows, no collapsing structures. Drive down Frenchmen
street, for example, and what do you see? Have you been here so long you
just overlook it now, ignore it?  A collapsing awning, missing weather
boards, broken 2nd story windows, dumpsters sitting for weeks overflowing
with trash. All owned by people who could certainly fix it. This blight is
like chum in the water for sharks.  It says we are apathetic, if you hunt
prey here, no one cares. It is in some ways  worse than graffiti  in that
respect. The research and stats provided by the law enforcement community
are pretty clear, reduce blight and you reduce crime.
