NEWS UPDATES
Fortunately, Gustav seems to have largely spared the City of New Orleans and it
appears that the levee system was sustained. The issue of greatest concern to many
Gulf Coast residents is when they can return home.
As of 7:22 PM, the TImes Picayune is reporting the following re-entry information
for local parishes:
* Orleans Parish: Currently, Orleans Parish is only allowing those with Tier 1 placards
to re-enter the Parish. Residents without placards may not enter the city until
Thursday, August 4 (11:59 PM on Wednesday, August 3). Until ordinary residents
are allowed to re-enter, the mandatory evacuation order and dusk to dawn curfew
remain in effect. Go to www.cityofno.com [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001GrEovW26cUTbhThaUYCR7VLY2ZN0MWzsl4MiekX2c8M5uNuFz3L4tK57WZbh2Dt0CYRzaQgN_b0GYUcFOgjZPpGivp0oVFZPoGaNXgdORLs1Rfp3zEwkKhnlS0XdOJdx]
for details about how the phased re-entry plan works.
* Jefferson Parish: All residents of Jefferson Parish will be able to re-enter as
of 6 AM Wednesday morning. However residents should expect difficult conditions,
as many services in the Parish have not been restored. Visit www.jeffparish.net

ACTION ALERTS
The following is an update from the Louisiana Justice Institute [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001GrEovW26cUQrDtZhhl3a4WfM4f6O7E7PAHcFTqldQWYumdIu5Nb0iByE3-fjYnRaFQy5bJTpP6qX6I7wb3hGe8_9LptS5L1aVvyiE4LEsewoxjjJCG_vAA==]
regarding FEMA's announcement that they will not be providing financial assistance
to Gulf Coast evacuees.
Earlier today, the FEMA Director anounched the federal government would not be providing
financila assistance ot Gulf Coast Gustav evacuees, but instead would rely on NGOs
such as the Red Cross to provide food, shelter, and "comfort." The bottom line
is that nearly 2 million of our friends, family and neighbors "voluntarily" evacuated
the GUlf Coast region, and tehy cannot possibly return in one, two, or even three
days. No doubt, trying to re-occupy cities from Lake Charles through New Orleans
and South Louisiana will take time and money. "Comfort" ain't "Cash" and hotels
require dollars, not prayers for payment!
Please call and write to Senator Landrieu and Senator Vitter, Governor Jindal and
Mayor Nagin and demand
1. they provide an orderly porcess for the return of all residents to the greater
New Orleans area, and the entire Gulf Coast region, and
2. they force FEMA to provide cash compensation to evacuees in order to defray the
cost for this extraordinary effort.Senator Landrieu: 202-224-5824
Senator Vitter: 202-224-4623
Governor Jindal: 225-342-7015
Mayor Nagin: 504-658-4000
