Watson Memorial Teaching Ministries & BFAM Music Group presents

A Crime Prevention Summit

(New Orleans)--The Family Center of Hope at Watson Memorial Teaching Ministries will hold a crime prevention summit on Wednesday, June 17, at 7:00 p.m., at 4422 St. Charles Avenue to introduce its most recent initiative Project Restore. Participating in the summit will be City Council members Arnie Fielkow and James Carter, District Attorney Leon
Cannizzaro, Criminal Sheriff Marlin Gusman. Mayor C. Ray Nagin and Police Chief Warren Riley have also been invited. The crime prevention summit will focus on Taking Responsibility for a Safer Community: Solutions to Crime.

The summit will feature Rev. Khalil Osiris, a nationally recognized re-entry and restorative justice expert. Having spent 20 years of his life in prison, Osiris' work focuses on helping people overcome what he calls the incarceration of "self imposed limitations." A significant body of work has emerged over the past 20 years, which demonstrates that certain types of programs offered in community and correctional environments are more effective in reducing both crime and recidivism. Project Restore is one such program. It utilizes an
evidence-based curriculum called Get Out and Stay Out that is designed to promote cognitive, emotional, and behavior ownership among youth and adult offenders.

The crime prevention summit will lay the foundation for the two-day 16th annual Citywide Men's Conference at Watson Memorial Teaching Ministries. The conference, which is open to men, women and youth, will run Thursday and Friday, June 18 and 19, beginning at 7:30 p.m. nightly. The speakers are nationally renowned Bishop Joseph Walker of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Nashville and Pastor Norman Hutchins, an internationally known gospel recording artist. Workshops for men and women dealing with relationship issues will be held prior to the conference at 6:30 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday.

In 1991, Pastor Tom Watson and Rev. Patricia Watson established The Family Center of Hope, as a 501(c) 3, faith-based agency designed to promote services that address and effect change in the areas of community violence, substance abuse, school dropouts, teenage parenting and other dysfunctions with high risk families. All events are open to the general public and are free.
