ArtSessions Panel Discussion—Street Art, Part I: The Mark [image: image]
*WHAT:* "Street Art, Part I: The Mark", the first of two panels dealing with
this exciting topic. *The Panel is free and open to the public, with a
suggested donation of $3.00.*
Moderated by Mia Kaplan, Co-owner of Ammo Gallery
*WHEN:* Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 at 7:00 PM
Street artists' work can be found on buildings, railway cars, on streets, in
tunnels, and other incidental places. At what point do we define something
as "art", beyond the popular definition? Artists Michael De Feo, Michael
Dingler, Dan Witz, and Gabriel Flores will engage in a discussion moderated
by Mia Kaplan, Co-owner of Ammo Gallery. Join us as they examine how Street
Artists have branded themselves in the contemporary market. Who are their
heroes, and how did the street became their preferred venue for showing
work? Discussion will take place at the Louisiana ArtWorks building, 725
Howard Avenue at Carondelet.
*Panelists:*
Michael De Feo, Artist
Michael Dingler, Artist
Dan Witz, Artist
Gabriel Flores, Artist
*WHERE:* Louisiana ArtWorks
725 Howard Avenue, New Orleans, LA
(at the corner of Carondelet Street, just off Lee Circle)
This program is made possible by the Joan Mitchell Foundation and a grant
from the Louisiana State Arts Council through the Louisiana Division of the
Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
There are several reasons why I decided to move to the Big Easy, some of you
out there might have thought I was crazy, I have a had a wonderful time in
both Seattle and Philadelphia, Philly being my home, and Seattle being my
crush. But I felt it necessary to move on and to be a part of this amazing
city, although corrupt and highly disorganized, SEE/READ/LEARN - Governor
Bobby Jindal, Mayor Ray Nagin, police chief Warren Riley....... anyway, the
amount of positive uplifting and positive art interaction will trump the
negative in due time, I believe. The happenings I post here will hopefully
spread the word, knowledge and understanding of those of you not familiar
with whats going on here in The Big Easy.
New Orleans Tile Company:
http://neworleanstileco.com/ - Nick Hasslock
Nick and I made friends a few months back and never really pursued any
lasting friendship until about two weeks ago when we bumped into each other
again at a weekly darts tournament. We threw around a few ideas (and darts)
and decided it would be beneficial for us both to put our heads together and
create together. Nick has been blessed with the privilege and expertise to
create and continue a true New Orleans tradition. The official New Orleans
Street Tiles, originally made throughout the mid 19th century into the 20th
century, by a Spanish tile company, and subsequently placed on almost all
the street corners throughout the French Quarter and surrounding city. I
have been helping Nick out, (more learning than helping) but it has been a
wonderful experience, and he has decided to donate a few tiles to WWOZ 90.7
FM or wwoz.org for there upcoming "fundrive" March 4th - 13th, a wonderful
radio station I will discuss in a little bit further in the next paragraph.
The reason I am passing this info on to you is that Nick is looking to
expand his business and Is willing to custom make tiles for you and your
business, please read up on his site and feel free to contact him, or me,
for any further questions or comments. See the site link above.
WWOZ info and Spring Fun Drive:
WWOZ 90.7 FM, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Station, begins its Spring
2009 On-Air Membership Pledge Drive on Wednesday March 4th at 7AM ending on
Friday March 13th at 2PM. In this ten day drive, WWOZ volunteers, show hosts
and local musicians will reach out to our over 150,000 loyal listeners both
locally and worldwide to join the WWOZ family by becoming or renewing their
support of the station.
Membership support is the financial backbone of WWOZ, comprising 80% of our
funding. As WWOZ continues to grow, it is only with the support of members
that we can continue to bring you the Ultimate New Orleans music experience.
In the past six months, WWOZ has brought you John Mooney crooning at the
Crescent City Blues & BBQ Fest, The Blind Boys of Alabama live onstage at
the Voodoo Music Experience, 30 sousaphone players jamming in the streets of
the French Quarter, Dave Bartholomew performing from our broadcast booth on
his 88th (!) birthday and Irma Thomas soul-caroling from 'OZ's performance
studio.
Each day WWOZ volunteer Show Hosts play the music they are passionate about,
all without commercial interests or considerations. They do it simply for
the love of the music.
Non-profits and community organizations rely upon WWOZ to spread the word
about what’s happening in and around the New Orleans community. From coming
on-air to discuss a fundraiser for the Musicians’ Clinic, to sharing
information about affordable housing workshops, WWOZ is committed to being
an active part of the New Orleans collective.
These are just some of the out-of-body experiences and dedication to the
future of New Orleans music that only WWOZ can bring. With WWOZ there's
always more, but only with generous support from our listeners!

*Bringing New Orleans Music to the Universe*
As some of you have cared to learn, I have been working with a group of
talented artists and friends to create and organize the NoLAa post-Katrina
art campaign encouraging people in all faubourgs of Greater New Orleans to
publicly display works of art, regardless of how simple or untutored it may
seem to be, for the purpose of rebuilding and restoring the human spirit in
our city. NOLA is a unique and beautiful city that has historically embraced
the spirit of personal freedom that supports the growth of the artist,
musician and writer ... the goal of the NoLA Rising Project is to showcase
that spirit.
Rising United Artist Front,
One consistent outlet for the artists involved with Nola Rising has been our
paint parties, we bring the supplies you bring your talent. SCADNOLA & NOLA
Rising - Art Walk with Pyrates...come join the crew of NOLA Pyrate Week and
the Artists of St.
Claude Arts District for a celebration of Art & Culture - with food, grog,
live entertainment AND...a very special Paint
Party for children of all ages with ReX - champion of NOLA Rising! Proceeds
will go to benefit New Orleans school
children's art programs and library...this will take place along the Neutral
Ground on St. Roch Ave.

When Lafcadio Hearn moved to New Orleans in the 1870s, he wrote to a friend
back in Cincinnati:
"Times are not good here. The city is crumbling into ashes. It has been
buried under a lava flood of taxes and frauds and maladministrations so that
it has become only a study for archaeologists. Its condition is so bad that
when I write about it, as I intend to do soon, nobody will believe I am
telling the truth. But it is better to live here in sackcloth and ashes,
than to own the whole state of Ohio."
