Jeff Davis Play Spots
**********************************************************************
Since the devastation of the 2005 hurricane season, the neighborhood’s
Comiskey Park has remained gated off from the public and closed. The
area’s play spot and basketball goals have been removed, and the
existing facility remains in litigation with its future questionable
and in limbo. Meanwhile, two open-air play spots that are open to the
public remain in disrepair.  These existing play spots could service
hundreds of children and families that live in the immediate
neighborhood and visit the Bayou St. John area. Many neighborhood
residents do not have access to private transportation, which makes it
important to have recreational facilities within walking distance of
their homes. In June 2009, the MotherShip Foundation formed a
partnership with Kaboom, a national play advocate, as a collaborative
step toward building playgrounds and fighting obesity in New Orleans.

Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo Festival
**********************************************************************
The MotherShip Foundation was initially established in October of 2005
to reinvigorate the people of post-Katrina New Orleans. To achieve
this goal, the MotherShip Foundation created Bayou Boogaloo, a free,
family-friendly, multi-cultural festival that celebrates the heritage
of New Orleans music, cuisine, art, and culture. Today, Bayou Boogaloo
features two live music stages, exploring New Orleans’s musical roots
in blues, jazz, and rock. Families and children are made welcome with
a kids’ stage for children’s entertainment and activities. Local
merchants serve Mid-City favorites, localized renditions of
traditional New Orleans cuisine, and the Boogaloo Art Market offers
original artwork from some of Louisiana’s most celebrated artists. By
featuring New Orleans’s various musical traditions, cuisine, and art,
the Bayou Boogaloo brings people from all over the city to the bayou
to take a break from the hard work of recovery, to reconnect with
friends and neighbors, and to give Mid-City New Orleans a day to
celebrate itself.
